<text>This is a political poster from the 1978 election for state comptroller. It belongs to John Castle who ran as Republican nominee that year and appears to be the incumbent. Castle lived in Dekalb, and he was chairman of the Sandwich State Bank. He also worked in the Governor Thompson Administration. Castle was also a graduate of Princeton. Not much is known about Castle's political career after 1978; a recent newspaper article indicates Castle maintained ownership of the DeKalb County Journal and backs the Republican Party there in local elections. Castle lost the 1978 election to Roland Burris, graduate of Southern Illinois University, who became the first black to work in a major elected office in the history of the state of Illinois. Castle's value to the History Harvest collection is to defining local politics. He is a strong business leader and organized political leader in the community, He has made DeKalb more recognizable while working in state government on state issues. Not much indication is provided to understand what the poster meant to David Farrell, its contributor. Similarly, sources indicate that Burris questioned Castle's ethics by constantly using his picture in TV adds to associate his race with being unfit to run for political office according to the Chicago Tribune. </text>

<text>This is a political advertisement ran in the Southern Illinoisian paper on March 14, 1976. The literature pertains to the 1976 Illinois Governor Election. It was a privately funded ad paid by Southern Illinois Voters and Tony Ison of Mt. Vernon. The entire page is dedicated to Walker's record in his first term of governor in 1972. Much of it relates how he has made decision which have positively affected Southern Illinois. The Southern Illinoisian is based out of Carbondale reporting on local matters, not just political. In 2013, it changed over to The Southern, and has grown in influence and readership, being used by many graduate students today for scholarly research. It continues to focus on current issues including a recent controversy on excessive police force in Metropolis, Illinois. As for Dan Walker, he is war hero and veteran who is most famously known for walking the entire State of Illinois during the 1971 election. Walker lost in the 1976 Democratic Primary to Michael Howlett, a Mayor Daley backer. Walker went on to be convicted of bank fraud in the late eighties and spent only a year and a half in prison due to time served and the justification of faith healing, despite being sentenced to seven years. </text>

<text>This is a political advertisement ran in the Southern Illinoisian paper on March 14, 1976. The literature pertains to the 1976 Illinois Governor Election and Democratic Primary in which the ad supports Democrat Michael Howlett for governor. It was a privately funded ad paid by Sangamon County Friends of Michael Howlett and Charles Robbins. Howlett went onto get the nomination over his opponent the incumbent Dan Walker, but Howlett lost to the Republican Jim Thompson. This particular advertisement is a counter ad to the run in the previous page by Dan Walker, funded by Southern Illinois Voters and Tony Ison of Mt. Vernon. The entire page is dedicated to Howlett, and Robbins uses the forum to highlight how Governor Walker once elected had brought in mostly out of state people to fill positions within the administration. In all twenty-seven names and positions were listed in the grievance inside this ad including James Trainer, Director of Public Aid, Ed Bishop, Department of Business and Economic Development, and David Fogel, Executive Director of Illinois Law Enforcement Commission. </text>

<text>Front page of Kansas City Star dated July 28, 1974. Without the story telling sheets, its difficult to tell what part of this page was important to David Farrell or was connected to Illinois. In a recent article from the State Journal Register, Farrell explained that he used to live in Washington not far from Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. The front page of the Kansas City Journal read "Impeachment Article Voted." Like many Americans who supported President Nixon, shock of the House Judiciary Committee's recommendation and vote of 27-11 to impeach thus turning it over to the House of Representatives for formal action cause us to remember and document it as history as with Farrell who was perhaps in Kansas City that day it happened. This article discusses the charges of obstruction of justice brought upon Nixon. One of the committee members Representative McClory, according to this article, was an Illinois Republican from the 13th district who voted against impeachment. He had served in office from 1963 to 1983 between the 12th and 13th districts but had a law practice in Washington D.C. Perhaps Farrell knew McCory. </text>
