Ossie Langfelder won the 1987 Mayoral election and held the office until 1995. He lost the election that year in his attempt for a third term. He was a Democratic candidate. The one on the left is a Republican Party Illinois Election Ticket as verified by Library of Congress. The one on the right would be the Democratic Party Election Ticket, researching James Allen who name is found under governor on the ballot we know he served in both the 33rd and 35th Congress of Illinois before unsuccessfully running for Governor. The year 1860 is handwritten on both ballots. Richard Yates was the Republican nominee for Illinois Governor who won that election and remained in that office throughout the Civil War. The way people voted is much different from today. These tickets featured in the Church collection may have been part of a party newspaper. Typically, voters could cut them out and present them at a polling place. Title A name given to the resource 1940 Campaign Buttons for Election with Church, Willkie and Green Description An account of the resource The campaign button with the name Church on it and year 1976 has little history with it. Church had served as Deputy Mayor of Springfield between 1986 and 1995. We don't know if Church ran for office in 1976 or had a family member who had. We do know that he worked as curator for the Paul Findley Congressional Office Museum and Archival Collection at Illinois College in Jacksonville. Church had volunteered for Findley's campaign during the seventies. Findley served the 20th District of Illinois in the U.S. House from 1961 to 1983. Another button with the colors of red, white and blue and the names Brooks, Willkie and Green goes all the way back to 1940. This was a pinback button. Wendell Willkie received the Republican Party nomination in 1940 for President, He lost the election to President Roosevelt, Illinois had all 29 electoral votes go to Roosevelt too. Willkie has no connection to Illinois; he is buried in Indiana. The others, Wayland Brooks ran for U.S. Senator and Dwight Green for governor, Illinois. The accompanying buttons with photos may have been of these men. Title A name given to the resource Political Poster for John Castle Running in Illinois Comptroller Election of 1978 Description An account of the resource This is a political poster from the 1978 election for state comptroller. It belongs to John Castle who ran as Republican nominee that year and appears to be the incumbent. Castle lived in Dekalb, and he was chairman of the Sandwich State Bank. He also worked in the Governor Thompson Administration. Castle was also a graduate of Princeton. Not much is known about Castle's political career after 1978; a recent newspaper article indicates Castle maintained ownership of the DeKalb County Journal and backs the Republican Party there in local elections. Castle lost the 1978 election to Roland Burris, graduate of Southern Illinois University, who became the first black to work in a major elected office in the history of the state of Illinois. Castle's value to the History Harvest collection is to defining local politics. He is a strong business leader and organized political leader in the community, He has made DeKalb more recognizable while working in state government on state issues. Not much indication is provided to understand what the poster meant to David Farrell, its contributor. Similarly, sources indicate that Burris questioned Castle's ethics by constantly using his picture in TV adds to associate his race with being unfit to run for political office according to the Chicago Tribune.
