She represented Illinois in the United States Senate from 1993 to 1999. She was the first African American for the Democratic party.

Braun served as the United States Ambassador to New Zealand. Ran as a candidate for the Democratic nomination during the 2004 U.S. presidential election. She as also ran for mayor of Chicago. but lost to Rahm Emanuel.
